Rah is an Iranian-Canadian video, photo and performance artist based in Ottawa, Ontario. She is the recipient of the Studio Das Weisse Haus residency in Vienna for fall 2014 and Artslant’s Georgia Fee Artist / Writers Residency in Paris. Her video piece “Oreo” was recently exhibited at the Cutlog Contemporary Art Fair in New York and has been selected by MUU Galleria in Finland for Performance Voyage 5, a 15-city European touring exhibition.
Rah’s artistic practice critiques the visual stereotypes and performative aspects that shape female gender identity and Iranian ethnic identity. Her perspective is that of a Canadian-Iranian woman who attempts to assert her gender and cultural identity, while at the same time questioning these very concepts. Daughter to Iranian political exiles, her performances highlight the challenges that an expatriate may encounter; her characters confront and invite us to reflect on our relationship with the racialized female body and Iranian ancestry, both of which tend to be either romanticized or dehumanized in western representations.
