Sebastián Benítez is a Toronto-based photographer from Caracas, Venezuela and whose work has been featured in exhibitions within the United States, South Korea, China, Finland and Canada. His most recent project explore the role that objects have in the construction and maintenance of notions of self.
The photographic series Not This Way Either (2012), explores the artist erratic dependence on objects that connect him to his home country. The objects depicted were either brought from his country of origin, or collected as memorabilia here in Canada. The photographs depict object that overshadow human presence within the frame. This overtaking by objects alludes to a suspended notion of personal and national identity that are associated with things. Taken out of their original context these memorabilia offer fragmented notions of “Venezuelan-ness,” and provide us with an incomplete narrative of the artist’s concept of home.
